Empire stars Bryshere “Yazz” Gray and Serayah are featured in the December 2016/January 2017 issue of Seventeen.
What does it take to build an empire? Seventeen‘s December/January cover stars Yazz and Serayah are still figuring it out, but so far it’s taken a lot of hard work, talent, and perseverance to get them where they are today — and they’re spilling their success secrets in our latest issue.
Just ask Yazz, who had to deal with so much rejection before his big break.”One yes can turn everything around for you and Empire did that for me,” he tells Seventeen. “The struggle makes me appreciate the little things, like just being able to have lunch every day.”
And whenever Serayah needs a little inspo, she turns to her role models. “I always look at Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant — they were the first ones in the gym and the last ones in the gym,” she says. “And I just was watching a documentary on Beyoncé, where a background singer was saying that Beyoncé’s the first and last one in the stadium to rehearse. I thought that was awesome. It’s those moments that count, and that’s why those people are who they are.”
Another thing she’s had to learn over the years? How to love herself. “I hated my hair — it always felt poufy and curly and people would poke it and ask, ‘Why is it so big?’ I started dyeing and cutting it and trying to make it as straight as possible,” she says. “Then I got this role on Empire where I wear my hair big and natural, and I’ve come to realize it’s beautiful.”
It’s true — Empire has been a major life change for both Yazz and Serayah, but there’s one thing that will never change: Their strictly platonic BFF status. “She’s a cool girl,” Yazz says. “She’s very attractive, but we’re just so much friends, like homies.”
Empire airs Wednesdays at 9/8c on Fox.
