Grey’s Anatomy star Ellen Pompeo is featured in the October 2016 issue of Good Housekeeping South Africa.
From the digital issue:
Ellen Pompeo, 46, has got a husband and children she loves (younger daughter Sienna is 2); she just re-upped her contract on Grey’s Anatomy, continuing her reign as one of the highest paid actresses in TV; and she’s living in a beautiful home she helped design — a California-style oasis atop a hill, away from the hustle and bustle of downtown Los Angeles.
For Ellen, this home is truly where her heart is. With the help of her friend and interior decorating partner, Martyn Lawrence Bullard, she had a direct hand in every inch of its renovation and design, often drawing inspiration from fashion (pairing black and navy in Chris’s library, à la Lanvin), hotels (photos of the La Mamounia in Morocco were a big influence) and popular hangouts like Soho House New York (which gave her the idea to put big velvet sofas in the rooms).
“The house represents [my family] because it’s hip but also comfortable,” she says, cradling a cup of coffee as she settles into one of the cushy couches that seem to beckon from nearly everywhere. “The furniture tells a story once it’s been lived in. That’s what makes a house a home. I don’t worship things.”
It shows — there’s no coaster for her cup, and when one of her dogs hops onto the furniture, he’s greeted with cuddles, not a scolding. Chickens peck peacefully in the garden. “I’m a straight-up homebody,” says Ellen. “It’s hard to get me out of the house once the sun goes down.”
Going forward, it seems Ellen plans to enjoy the rest of her run on Grey’s and then move on. “Acting, for the most part, is a young girl’s game,” she says. She also wants to stay closer to home while transitioning into working more with her production company, Calamity Jane. (She has an office on the studio lot.) Her daughter Stella runs back in to relate details of her dinner burrito, then sits at the piano to pound a few keys. Small joys like this are why Ellen wants to be home, and the reason the only thing left on her wish list is staying healthy. “I hope I live a really long time for my girls,” she says. “I want to be with them for as long as possible.”
Grey’s Anatomy airs Thursdays at 8/7c on ABC.
